According to, approximately 1:12 men and 1:200 women are affected by some degree of color blindness. This may mean their eyes have a complete inability to see color or, more commonly, a decreased ability to see and/or differentiate between colors. It’s usually not an actual type of blindness, but rather a perceptive deficiency in color vision. While most people are born color blind and inherit the condition genetically, there are other ways to acquire it later in life. Other causes include accidents and traumatic experiences that result in brain or retinal damage and exposure to UV light that damages the retina. People often develop color vision deficiency later in life and it has been associated with age related macular degeneration, certain diseases, drugs, and exposure to chemicals over time. Furthermore, there are different types and levels of color blindness that are often associated with certain colors that an individual has problems discriminating between. One common example is red-green color blindness, where people have a hard time differentiating between shades of red and green.

In contrast, when it comes to optical illusions, they’re all about the interplay between our eyes, brain, and perception. Specifically, the eyes visually perceive an image which the brain processes as not fitting in line with, or matching up to, the stimulus or source that it’s emanating from. In other words, it’s when you look at something and end up seeing something else that’s completely different. You look at X but think you’re seeing Y. In general, there are all sorts of different types of illusions and optical ones, also known as visual illusions, happen to be the most well known sub-category.

It’s important to note that if you think you’re losing your vision you should have a professional check it out, because once eyesight starts to fade it’s hard and rare to get back. Take this quiz to see how strong your visual perception skills are and how well you can see!
