There is not much you can do with a pumpkin after it has been carved. People stick candles in them to light them up, but that seems to be where the fun ends. The only thing I can think of is that after Halloween is over and done with, and the once healthy orange gourd is starting to turn brown and smushy, you can smash it up and compost it. The possibilities certainly are not endless, but thanks to everybody’s favorite Russian Hacker, there is one other fun idea you can try.

It involves an exploding pumpkin face, but don’t worry it’s much safer than it sounds. This pumpkin trick is a cool way to entertain any guests you may have visiting in the days leading up to Halloween. Children and young adults will be especially delighted with it and anyone can pull this off. All you need is a pumpkin, a resealable Ziploc bag, and a piece of dry ice.

Start off by cutting the top off the pumpkin and cleaning out the insides. Next, carve a simple face into the side of it but be sure to save all the pieces. You will need them later and they have to fit snugly back into the holes they were carved out of. That is also why you should aim to keep the design you choose to carve simple. When the pumpkin is all done, place the pieces back into their respective holes and reassemble it so that it looks whole again. Take a Ziploc bag and fill it slightly with about an inch or so of warm water. Drop a small piece of dry ice into the bag and seal it up quickly before placing it down inside the pumpkin. Place the cover on and wait a few seconds.

The pumpkins face should explode and the mouth, eyes, and other carved pieces pop out of their sockets! The pressure inside the sealed up pumpkin builds up quickly and the dry ices makes it look like its eyes are smoking and it’s vomiting vapor. The best part about this trick is that you can do it many times. Nothing gets ruined and all you have to do is put the pieces back into place. Do it for all your friends and family, and especially their kids, because people will love this! Chances are they haven’t seen it done before and they’ll remember it forever.
