It attempts to guess your psychological age, not your actual birth age, based on the number and type of Hollywood films that you’re able to recognize. The key distinction here that needs to be noted is that your psychological age is very different from your real age and therefore the results you get at the end of it don’t reflect how old you are!
To be clear, and so that we’re all on the same page, a person’s psychological age is defined as “the subjective age-equivalent of a person or how old one feels.” Douglas K. Symons set out and originally defined the term in the Encyclopedia of Child Behavior and Development. In the book he further explained that individuals may have a psychological age which is either greater or less than their chronological age (aka their age from birth). Thus, it follows naturally that when a person acts much more mature, or feels older than their actual age, then their psychological age is also older. The inverse of this is also true as well, when a person acts immature for their age or feels younger, then their psychological age is less than whatever their chronological age happens to be.
Now that the basics are out of the way, time for the fun stuff! Each and every movie out there comes from its own age and era, each of which were marked by certain genres and types of films. Western movies were huge throughout the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, the 80s were a boom for sci-fi, while 90s romcoms and teen flicks were wildly popular. Those are just a few examples out of hundreds of other sub-categories and classes of movies that have existed over the years. While the demand for them rises and falls, resulting in mini-revivals of sorts, they can all be broken down neatly into ages which makes them perfect for this quiz!
