Have you ever stopped and wondered how your brain is wired and why you’re able to perceive and make sense of the world all around you? Or more specifically, how you process all the constant, incoming stimuli and information and break it down. The majority of people have not really put much thought into it and we tend to take our brains for granted because using them and thinking comes naturally, so we don’t even have to think about it!
However, when it comes down to it, the human brain is an unbelievable organ. It performs like a well-oiled machine, or rather a powerful supercomputer, and yet we still don’t know all that much about it. What we do know is amazing and proves just how brilliant and fascinating our brains truly are. For example, researchers have found that the human brain can process information at speeds of up to 268 miles per hour, that’s quicker then even the fastest cars in the world! In addition, it generates between ten and twenty-three watts of power, which is enough to power a standard light bulb. If those crazy statistics don’t put how awesome our brains are into perspective, not much else will!
One of the coolest things our brains are hardwired for is recognizing patterns in the world around us. Whether it’s colors, shapes, numbers, letters, textures, tones, smells, or something else, we’re always connecting, labeling, and grouping things into lists and categories. We do this both consciously and unconsciously, it’s natural and endless, we can’t stop it even if we tried to!
Whenever you think, you’re activating several mental pathways. Your brain, eyes, and mind are all working together to make sense of what you’re seeing and experiencing. Your eyes send signals to the brain which interprets them and sorts out the countless sources of stimuli that we’re constantly being bombarded with. However, for some people, recognizing patterns is a very different experience for them. Those with synesthesia have the unique ability to hear letters, smell shapes, see numbers and letters as colors, and more. According to Wikipedia, this is due to “a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.” Depending on whether or not a person has Synesthesia all comes down to how their brain is wired. In fact, you may even have some form of Synesthesia and not even know it!
This particular cognitive psychology quiz can quickly reveal your way of thinking. It examines how you see different patterns, shapes, and images that are presented to you in visually confusing and misleading types of ways. In the end, your results will determine whether or not you have Synesthesia so try it now and see what you get!
